Three friends and I recently returned from the Georgia Library Media Association Summer Institute at Lake Blackshear resort in Cordele, GA.It was a great event (once we were moved from the musty-smelling-swamp-creature cabin into a cozy villa with screen porch and lake view!), and as always, chock full of info and ideas! This year the main topic of discussion was the important role that teacher-librarians (a.k.a. media specialists) will play in the upcoming roll-out of the CCGPS (
Common Core Georgia Performance Standards). As with any institute or conference, I always come back a bit overwhelmed by all the ideas that have been shared and how I will implement them in my program. Right now I am also feeling a strange mixture of anxiety and excitement as I think about the opportunities I will have to support teachers and students as we begin our journey with
Common Core. From what I have seen so far, the Common Core relies heavily on navigating informational texts, research skills, Web 2.0 tools, and matching books to readers based on multiple dimensions - hey, this is what we (teacher-librarians) do!! Below are some links to info from several of the sessions. I know I'll be coming back to these resources again and again as I plan for next year! What great resources do you have for Common Core? Thanks for reading! ~D
